Dev Log 4 - "Final" Build
To be honest, although this is called the "final build," it doesn't really feel like it to me. There is so much more I wish I could have gotten done before today. The most obvious would be the animations. I really only have a handful of character animations in the game right now, and they're not only missing color, but they don't have any linework either. Instead of spending time perfecting each character animation, I decided that, in the limited amount of time I had, it would be better if I fleshed out the rest of the animations for the abilities (i.e. projectiles, shields, etc.). I don't feel like these are perfect either, as they were a bit rushed, and I'm still having issues with the materials and getting the lighting to look normal (it looks a bit bright on the projectiles in my opinion).
All this to say, considering I've been dealing with three other classes, and this quarter being one of the hardest I've ever had within my time at DePaul (in terms of the workload), I suppose I did the best that I could.
Anyway, a major change (that took quite a bit of time to implement) since last update/dev log was organizing my blueprints. I know I shouldn't have, but I originally had the majority of my blueprints in just one script. I knew that was horrible practice, but I did it anyway (and it came back to bite me). However, I took the time to actually go through and divide it into separate scripts, which--at the time--ended up creating an additional five or so bugs, but in the end, I think it ended up solving more bugs than it caused.
A big portion of what I did for this update was bug fixing. I had been having a lot of issues with abilities not going off properly or just getting straight-up cancelled. I also had issues with the end state of my game. Sometimes the characters would continue to attack each other despite being "dead." Sometimes the buttons wouldn't work in the end menu, specifically if the player lost as a cause of the time running out, but not if they lost by the character dying from having no health.
I was thankfully able to fix all of these issues, except I have now realized that for some reason there are bugs in the build that are only showing up there, and not in the editor, which I will have to try to figure out.
Looking forward, I hope to continue to work on this game and refine it, finishing the character animations, polishing the other animations, as well as adding elements I had hoped and planned on implementing but ran out of time for (visual cooldowns for abilities, a cutscene or visual novel portion at the beginning to walk the player through the lore, giving the player the option to have a choice between which character they want to play as, etc.).
